ELIC Question Number UNO

  1. What are your thoughts about Oskar at this point in the novel, after "Heavier Boots"?  Do you sympathize with him?  Are you critical of him?  Choose a specific action of his as the basis for your comment.
For the last two chapters I have become more and more critical of Oskar as his emotions have taken control of him, and he he continues to explain his disturbing thoughts. The action that came to my mind that was the most outrageous was during the play when he explained the smashing of skulls on page 146. Although he was voicing his frustration, he was so violent in the way he said it that it caused me to notice how emotional he really is. Nobody has the right to want to commit the violent acts that Oskar explained he wanted to do. He allowed his emotions to get the best of him during this situation.Emotions can be an important factor in trusting a character because when a character is over emotional they can often times have trouble determining actual reality from what their emotions are defining as reality. For all we know we are seeing distorted views of people. We know that we are because we here constant complaints and mean comments about Oskar's mom, but she is going through a hard time as well. The neglect for others, assumptions he has made, and bias are all factors that make me believe that Oskar is unstable as well as a hard vantage point to view from.
